Preparation for bariatric surgery

Preparation for bariatric surgery. Certain basic tests are done prior to bariatric surgery such as:  a complete Blood Count (CBC), Urinalysis, and a Chemistry Panel, which gives a readout of about 20 blood chemistry values. All patients get a chest X-ray and an electrocardiogram to check internal organs and it’s functioning. Our surgeons ask for a gallbladder ultrasound to look for gallstones, pulmonary function testing, echocardiogram, GI evaluation, cardiology evaluation, and psychological evaluation with a counselor and a nutritionist team before the surgery is scheduled.

What is the purpose of all these tests?

An accurate assessment of your health is needed before bariatric surgery. The best way to avoid complications is to never have them in the first place. If you are diabetic, special steps must be taken to control your blood sugar. Because surgery increases cardiac stress, your heart will be thoroughly evaluated. These exams, will determine if you have liver malfunction, breathing difficulties, excess fluid in the tissues, abnormalities of the salts or minerals in body fluids, or abnormal blood fat levels.

These tests are so crucial for surgery, that if one test is abnormal, or if there are additional concerns you may need to delay your surgery. For that particular reason we encourage International Patients to come to Cali at least a week and a half prior to their surgery to schedule additional testing if required, or follow-up appointments with specialists.

After your tests have been completed, your assigned surgeon will address the results of each test to determine if the result would affect your safety in the operating room and long-term success following your surgery.

After the testing happens, your surgeon and their team will guide you through behaviors and lifestyle changes to prepare you for your weight loss surgery procedure.

We would love to assist you in your weight-loss journey. Check out our webpage to learn more.
